I first encountered Pedro Carneiro's work through social media. The more I learned about him as a player, composer, and improviser, the more fascinated I became and the more I wanted to work with him. I simply asked him if he wanted to record together and to my delight he said yes.

And thus began a wonderful two months of emails, Zoom calls, and getting used to SonoBus. SonoBus allowed us to make music simultaneously, across the ocean, with virtually no latency or delay. We each had two computers running: one for SonoBus and one to record the sound on our end. Given that I'm usually staring at my instrument or have my eyes closed anyway this really wasn't any different than being in the same room. I could hear Pedro perfectly in real time and he could hear the same on his end.

Three of the tracks were precomposed (Drone No Drone, PedroPaytonPulses, and Oiseaux en Bois), the other three were created spontaneously, but with some previous discussion about tonalities, textures, and structure.

Pedro is one of the finest musicians I've encountered on every level, and one of the only other marimbists in the world who has an expansive knowledge of music and is deeply immersed in the study of improvisation.
