about

I put all kinds of stuff on the marimba: plastic bags, sheets of cardboard, towels, foam, and more. This simple addition of materials changes the instrument from a keyboard to a percussion instrument. It's still pitched of course, but the pitches are less prominent; the surface/contact noise is an equally important element. Shades of Konono No. 1 and the master Gyil musicians of Ghana found there way into these tracks, along with a healthy does of good old American Experimental music. This recording is dedicated to my father, Phil MacDonald, for his 81st birthday. He was a nuclear engineer and an avid reader of science fiction. He always encouraged me to explore and go further and think more deeply about things. His curious, creative, adventurous mind has been an inspiration to me my whole life. Happy birthday, Dad.
