I've been listening to Weasel's drumming for years. I first heard him with Peter Evans and I was deeply impressed with the polyphonic and polyrhythmic aspect of his playing. I was also taken with the compositional and orchestrational sensibilities of his drumming. Like I do with marimba, Weasel approaches the drum set as a canvas for pure sonic expression. It's a vehicle for composing in real time. His vast knowledge of the standard and not-so-standard repertoire combined with a seemingly limitless imagination means that improvising together becomes a rich, multi-layered, pan stylistic and cultural experience, something few people can manage.

While some of his playing is rooted in the drum set tradition, much of it is free from that tradition, free to explore new sonic territories, free to recontexualize the instrument, and free to go where no other drummer would. Or could.

I finally got the chance to make music with Weasel on a gig with Elliott Sharp's SysOrk in 2021. Weasel was a like a stick of dynamite: powerfully disruptive, clearing the mind and ear for new sonic experiences. We got along nicely and when I proposed to him that we get together and make some music he was up for it. I composed "Weasel" and "Walter" for him, and otherwise we improvised.
