In this recording I explore a rather free treatment of three Hindustani ragas that I've studied as a Dhrupad vocalist. I would not label this as traditional Hindustani music by any means. Aside from the treatment of the ragas on a fixed-pitch instrument (more on that in a series of future recordings), I quickly deviate from the modal language of each raga to explore atonality, extended timbral techniques, and gestures that are anathema to the ethos of traditional raga. Hence, the titles "Bhimpalasish", etc. And yet, the feeling and melodic shapes of the raga are saturated throughout my improvisations, even when I've left the tonal vocabulary entirely.

Without 25 years of intense study of Hindustani music I couldn't have made this recording, but likewise, without 35 years of intense study of Western music (including the "free jazz" and high modernist new music idioms) I wouldn't have been able to make this recording.
