about

Elliott Sharp's "Foliage" is a singular work of graphic notation, spanning 116 pages. Elliott writes:

"Foliage is primarily a graphic score open to interpretation and realization by any instrumentalist or ensemble of any form or size, whether for an extended duration or a succinct hit; as a concert performance or dynamic sound installation. I use traditional notation in much of my composing as it is often the most efficient way to convey instructions to a symphony orchestra or other 'classically' trained instrumentalists. Improvisation also has been extremely important for me, the best way to create social music. But there is another path between composed and improvised that is often best represented with graphics. Foliage is a culmination of my work in this approach, the closest I've come to presenting the 'look' of what I'm hearing when I compose in my Inner Ear, a visual manifestation of my sonic processes."

Like Elliott, much of my music lives between notated and improvised worlds, and graphic scores are an excellent intermediary. For this recording, each track represents a specific page. Most of the time I have tried to find fairly precise sonic replications of the visual images in the score (the cover art is a page from his score, for example), but eventually the piece takes on a life of its own. I've also made liberal use of drones, something Elliott and I both have an affinity for.

Like volume 1, this recording is dedicated with much love and respect to Elliott, who has been a guiding light in my life and work, and a constant source of inspiration. He is a pillar of experimental music, one of the most brilliant souls of our time, and he has created a singular body of music for the ages.
