about

Marimba Solos I, II and III were composed between February and April of 2009, on a commission by Payton MacDonald. Each of the three solos can either be performed separately, as a standalone concert piece; or the three can be played together, in which case they take on the form of a single work in three movements. At Mr. MacDonald’s request, the three pieces stay within a 4 1/4 octave range, with the 2nd A below middle C being the work’s lowest note. This element of practicality will allow the pieces to be played by performers who may not have access to one of the latest 5-octave instruments. Even with this restriction, each of the three solos seeks to carve out the greatest range of registral variety. In the first of the three solos, the opening two pitches - G and A (a major second) - form the melodic kernel from which the rest of the piece develops. In the second solo, with the opening tempo marking subtitled “misterioso,” there is a particular emphasis on the notes below middle C, with a series of repeated sequences and long-held two-note tremolos. There is also an evocation of Gregorian chant, with the introduction of the tremolo on middle C and the F below it, shortly after the work begins. The third solo is almost exclusively fast paced, which forms a fitting finale, when the three pieces are performed as a group. Marimba Solos I and II are dedicated to Payton MacDonald, and Marimba Solo III is dedicated to Payton MacDonald in honor of Peter Jarvis. The work was first performed at William Paterson University by Payton MacDonald on November 16, 2009 (and was later performed by him at the Eastman School of Music and at a New Jersey Music Educators Conference and at other venues). More recently, Mr. MacDonald reprised the Three Marimba Solos on a concert at William Paterson on March 5, 2018 in honor of my 70th birthday.
