about

The Rhythm of the Pitch, (Opus 75) was completed on March 17, 2018 and is the second marimba solo I have composed for and happily dedicated to virtuoso Payton MacDonald. The piece is designed to allow the performer to generate rhythms and grooves based on the available pitches (the rhythm of the pitch.) It is my hope that the provided pitches will in some way imply rhythmic continuity.

While speaking about the piece with Payton (before composing it) he requested that elements of improvisation be incorporated in the music. I share Payton’s interest in improvisation and found his request refreshing. It is my hope that the performer will feel musically liberated by the lack of specific rhythmic notation. -Peter Jarvis
